Il Costume di Arlésienne

The Arlésienne costume originated in the mid-18th century, born of the desire of the women of the Arles region to dress differently from other women. It evolved in line with Parisian fashion and across different eras: the ‘droulet’ costume, the Charles X, Louis Philippe and Napoleon III styles. It took on its definitive, refined form – known as the ‘modern’ style – at the end of the 19th century. The headdress is the most important part; it varies according to age, social status and the occasion. Nowadays, young women proudly wear the costume at traditional festivals.
