There is already a bust (funerary) of Charloun Rieu. Our project is to make the figure present and his literary work
contemporary character and his literary work. If the aim of the cultural project of the poets' circuit is to show
local heritage, we are proposing art in situ, anchored in the place.
The scale 1 wooden sculture, seated on a bench in a resting posture, throws pebbles in her sower's bag (a reference to the soup she makes).

Charles-Henri RIEU, dit Charloun. (Le Paradou 1846 – Fontvieille 1924).

Farmer, poet, félibre, chansonnier and translator, Majoral du Felibrige.

Charloun, the peasant poet, captures every moment of his life close to the land, rough and uncompromising. He captures the gentleness and the pain. His stories, published in the newspaper L’Aioli, bear witness to rural life in Provence. His poetry was published in 3 collections.

His 1st book, Li Cant dóu Terraire (The Songs of the Land), with a preface by Frédéric Mistral, brought together 133 songs he had composed to fashionable tunes. He took them from farmhouse to farmhouse, from festival to festival.

Some are still sung and danced, such as La Mazurka souto li pin.

He wrote a Provençal translation of Homer’s Odyssey and a 4-act drama in Provençal verse, Margarido dóu Destet.

He was elected Majoral of the Félibrige in 2005 and was laid to rest in his native village of Paradou.
